Morning Bell

2023

Morning Bell uses multiple clips of bird songs recorded during the confinement of 2020. At this time, only the sound of birds were heard to announce the morning of each day that passed in the city of Caen, Normandy. The recordings are converted to a minimal format for compatibility with embedded electronics. The aesthetic of the work is decidedly brute, using brass rods both for structure and electrical contacts. This approach is a reference to the techniques of Peter Vogel. The work is interactive in a minimal sense. The full mechanism is activated when an abrupt change of atmospheric light occurs in the room. A fan propels the full object in a spinning motion while a second actuator opens the feathers. The kinetic result is a wing perfectly aligned with the central axe of the object as it spins around like a ballerina.
