The Hypocrite
2025
The Hypocrite continues a series of brutalist works characterized by an intentionally crude and minimalized assembly, where aesthetic refinement is set aside in favor of unpolished expression. Wires hang loose, circuitry is exposed, and materials are left in their raw state. Precision is reserved for functionality alone; the message, by contrast, is deliberately lowbrow, even slapstick in tone.
At the center of the piece is a simple mechanism: a tongue sewn to the end of a motorized crank, endlessly licking a roll of toilet paper. As the roll unravels onto the floor, it produces a continuous cycle of waste.
The work explores themes of obstruction and dysfunction embedded in social constructs. The hypocrite serves as a central archetype, originally inspired by the expression “kiss ass,” or more directly in French, lèche-cul. It critiques those who pursue advancement not through merit or integrity, but through manipulation, opportunism, and hierarchical prowess.
The act of licking is both literal and symbolic. What comes out of the hypocrite’s mouth results only in waste. In an absurd loop of mechanical subservience, The Hypocrite exposes the emptiness of performative behavior and the toxic consequences of ambition detached from substance.
